Balancing Time & Organization

Ever see some of those amazing calendars for how to organize your world in 30 days, but realize on Day 3 that it is WAY too ambitious for your reality and feel disheartened?  Don’t worry, we’re right there with you.

When looking at those calendars, it makes so much sense (on paper) to just tackle one room at a time until it’s done… but sometimes those timelines just don’t jive with life.  Trust me, I want to knock my entire office out and have it be Insta-worthy by next Friday… But I’m also working out of that office during the week before cooking dinner.  And let’s not forget about entertaining that adorable five-year-old while supporting him with schoolwork!  An entire office takes time.

Tackling a bedroom in a week can feel great if you have that kind of time, but hun… let’s be real.  Even just changing over my clothes from summer to winter can be a day-long event as I let go of things I haven’t worn for the entire past season.  That doesn’t mean that it isn’t important.  That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.  It just means you need an organizational calendar that works with your real and busy life.

If you have, like many, a resolution or goal to “get more organized” in 2021, do it!  Do a little every day.  But don’t feel like you’re married to goals or schedules that are only going to set you up for feeling like you’re failing.  Planning a schedule for one-room-at-a-time can be incredibly satisfying once completed, but getting one, small thing accomplished every day and being able to maintain that consistency can be, too!

For instance, you may not have time to declutter and organize your kitchen during the week.  Save that bigger project for a weekend when you’re picking up those online grocery orders curbside and wrecking the pantry or fridge anyway.  Instead, think about one space that you can zhuzh up in 30 minutes or less.  (And yes, I absolutely had to look up how to spell “zhuzh.”  Isn’t the internet a wondrous thing sometimes?)

Here’s a look back at some of our “quick fixes” from January 2021 on Instagram that you can absolutely achieve during the weekday when you just need to see some kind of progress :
