Spring Closet Makeovers: A Season of Refresh and Renewal

As a professional organizer, I believe our homes should evolve with us—and that includes our closets. A fresh season is the perfect time to reset, reorganize, and breathe new life into your most-used spaces. This spring, I gave two closets in my own home a much-needed refresh: one playful DIY for my 9-year-old son, and one elegant upgrade for our primary closet. Both projects reflect different approaches—but the same goal: to create beautiful, functional spaces that support our daily life.

My Son’s Closet: Small Space, Big Character Energy

My son’s closet space before, bland and boring.

At the end of every season, I declutter my son’s closet, letting go of anything he’s outgrown. This helps maintain the systems I’ve set up for him and ensures that his space stays organized, manageable, and tailored to what he uses, loves, and needs.

This spring, I decided to take it a step further with a DIY refresh that didn’t break the bank. I painted the closet with two bold colors:

Chartreuse for the walls and ceiling, which ties in with his gaming chair

• The same deep blue from his bedroom, used on the shelves and hanging rod.

A little color refresh to brighten up this small closet space

Small kids closet decluttered, organized and functional. Space is maximized by using storage bins for out of season items and an adjustable closet hanging extender rod added for double hanging.

It turned a simple closet into a fun, energetic space that reflects my son’s personality while still staying functional. It’s a reminder that even small spaces can pack a lot of character with a little creativity.

Our Primary Closet: Function Meets Elegance

Primary closet before, outdated and not functional for two people to share.

While my son’s closet was a budget-friendly refresh, our primary closet was more of a long-overdue investment in everyday ease.

When we bought our home, we inherited an outdated closet system that lacked practicality and style. This spring, we upgraded to the Elfa Décor Plus line from The Container Store. It was custom designed to meet our needs and maximize the space beautifully.

But I didn’t stop there.

To bring in warmth, texture, and a stylist’s touch, I styled the closet with "Nomalanga" wallpaper by one of my favorite brands, Mitchell Black. This bold yet elegant print completely elevated the space. I also swapped out the old, dated light fixture and installed a statement showstopper—a ceiling light that not only brightens the room but ties perfectly into the wallpaper’s mood and color palette.

The result? A closet that feels like an extension of our home—not just a storage space, but a room that reflects our style and brings joy to our daily routines.

5 Simple Ways to Upgrade Your Closet (Without a Full Remodel)

Whether you’re working with a walk-in or a small reach-in, you don’t need a huge budget to transform your closet. Here are five easy and impactful ways to upgrade your space—and the benefits that come with each:

1. Declutter Seasonally

Why: Keeps your closet organized, reduces decision fatigue, and helps you stay aware of what you own.

Tip: Use the “Use it, Love it, Need it” rule. Anything that doesn’t fit one of those categories should go.

2. Add a Fresh Coat of Paint

Why: Instantly changes the mood and energy of the space.

Tip: Choose colors that coordinate with your bedroom or personal style. Even painting just the shelves or ceiling can add a fun pop.

3. Upgrade the Lighting

Why: Proper lighting makes the closet feel bigger, brighter, and more luxurious.

Product Ideas: Try a flush-mount light with personality (e.g., brass finishes, woven textures, or a mini chandelier for glam).

4. Incorporate Wallpaper or Peel-and-Stick Designs

Why: Adds instant style and makes the space feel intentional.

Product Idea: Mitchell Black offers beautiful peel-and-stick wallpaper options perfect for small spaces.

5. Use Coordinated Storage Solutions

• Why: Creates a cohesive, polished look and maximizes functionality.

• Product Ideas: Fabric bins, slim velvet hangers, labeled baskets, drawer dividers, and clear shoe boxes.

Final Thoughts: Out With the Old, In with the Refreshed

Closet makeovers don’t have to be expensive or overwhelming. Whether it’s a coat of paint, new lighting, or simply decluttering, small changes can make a big difference. These spring projects reminded me that organizing is about more than just tidying up—it’s about creating spaces that support your lifestyle and make everyday moments a little more joyful.

Declutter. Paint. Organize. Style.

It’s time to give your closet the love it deserves. Your closet should work for you—not against you.

With a little creativity, a manageable budget, and a few thoughtful upgrades, you can create a space that brings peace, beauty, and function to your everyday routine.
